Margaret Sanger
Margaret Sanger was born on September 14, 1879 and died on September 6, 1966. Margaret Sanger attended nursing school in Catskills. During her lifetime, Margaret opened the first birth control clinic, popularized the term "birth control", founded the American Birth Control League, and she established Planned Parenthood. Margaret Sanger believed that the only way to change the law, was to break it.
When Margaret was just 19 years of age, her mother died of Tuberculosis from carrying 11 children. Margaret was heartbroken of her mother's death and blamed her father. Sanger's mothers death led to her committment to Birth Control. In the early 1900's, Margaret Sanger put all of her time and effort into Birth Control. Her anger soon turned into militancy. Sanger was arrested in 1916 for opening the first birth control clinic in the country, but she was not deterred. In 1921, she founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood Federation. She had spent the next 3 decades promoting safe and effective birth control.
By the 1950's although Sanger had won many legal battles, she still was not pleased. Sanger was not happy about the still limited opportunities for women to get birth control. By the time she was in her 70's and in poor health condition, Sanger still would not give up. She was still dreaming about the "Magic Pill" that she had been dreaming of since 1912. Her search ended in 1951 when she met a man, named Gregory Pincus, that was willing to take on the project. Soon after she found a sponsor named Katharine McCormick which later led to the FDA approval. In 1960, her dream of having a birth control pill came true.
"No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother.
